From time to time, various posts are made on social media pertaining to 1001 uses for petroleum jelly. Many of those hacks include using the product directly on the skin. Now don't get me wrong, I grew up with the stuff, used it on my face, lips, burns, etc. I also rode around in the backseat of a car without a seatbelt while my parents hot boxed multiple decks of smokes on long road trips. Yes, I'm obviously still alive and hopefully I remain in good health for many, many more years. It doesn't mean those were wise choices back then and we certainly shouldn't consider that healthy behaviour today. Do you know why petroleum jelly is harmful to use on your skin? Read the product label; it contains petrolatum, which is a soft paraffin/paraffin wax or multi-hydrocarbon. Environment Canada established a research entity, The Chemicals Management Plan (CMP) "aimed at reducing the risks posed by chemicals to Canadians and their environment." They are reviewing petrolatum because there is concern that this chemical may be harmful to human health as a carcinogenic. Regardless of the outcome, if it's already a cancer concern why would we continue to use it? Petroleum jelly essentially suffocates your skin when applied topically and doesn't add any moisture, nor nutrients. Like I always tell my kids: "Life is a series of continuous improvements". We learn from our mistakes and as we age, we understand the importance of good health and to not take it for granted! Time to get back to basics, naturally! As a healthier alternative, use organic plant oils which can be absorbed by the skin naturally. Soybean wax, beeswax, sunflower, olive and coconut oils are awesome. Make your own - it's easy, here's how! Non-Petroleum Jelly: In a double boiler over medium-high heat, combine: 1/4 c. Coconut Oil; 1/4 c. Olive Oil; 1/2 c. *soybean wax. Remove from heat and add: 6-7 drops of Vitamin E oil (natural preservative). Stir thoroughly and pour into sterilized jar container (with lid). Allow to set in fridge. This will last for up to one year. Use anywhere you would normally use a petroleum jelly product. Apply after a shower to seal in moisture in winter. An excellent ointment for pads on your pets paws! * You can also use beeswax - this will make your product more firm and yellow in colour with a slight sweet scent. You can find wax at Michaels. Your welcome : )
